Structural damage creates an important challenge for the safety and flight quality of the aircraft. This type of damage causes extensive changes in the main parameters of the aircraft such as aerodynamic coefficients and mass characteristics. In this article, the design of the fault tolerant control system based on the nonlinear dynamic inverse is presented. The proposed approach has investigated the failure in the vertical tail. In order to modeling of damage, two new parameters have been introduced: damage degree coefficient and damage uncertainty. The uncertainty parameter expressing the coupling between the longitudinal and lateral-directional equations is caused by the asymmetry in the configuration of the damaged aircraft; and the damage degree coefficient shows the physical extent of the damage. To solve the damage problem, a fault diagnosis unit based on the extended Kalman filter has been augmented to the control system. By using the estimated values of the filter, stability derivatives and uncertainty parameters are updated in the control structure and the controller is adapted to the damage conditions. The method proposed in this paper, can be considered a new approach in the field of structural damage. Finally, different flight scenarios are simulated for the nonlinear model of the Boeing 747 aircraft. The results show the ability of the fault tolerant control system to improve the performance of the damaged aircraft.
