In this article, a new two-mass flywheel is introduced that utilizes discrete springs and polymer balls between its plates. The main objective of this design is to reduce the fluctuations in the output torque of piston engines. In this research, the motion equations of this flywheel have been modeled and solved using the fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. Subsequently, various parameters of the flywheel, such as inertia, rotational speed, damping, and stiffness, have been examined and optimized with Design Expert software. After optimization, the flywheel with optimal specifications was constructed and tested experimentally under real conditions. The results obtained from the analytical model and the experimental tests show good agreement, with a discrepancy of less than 11.6 percent. Furthermore, This flywheel has been able to reduce the output torque fluctuations of the piston engine of the propeller aircraft by 89.9 percent. This performance improvement demonstrates the high potential of this system in enhancing the efficiency and stability of piston engines.
